One Room Challenge Spring 2021 Week 7 - Creating a Keeping Room

Creating a Keeping Room Week Seven

The beginning of Week 7 has started off with a bang! The fireplace installers did come and install the gas fireplace insert. Week 7 has turned out to be full of activity, and I think we just might pull off completion by the end of Week 8.

Tuesday arrived, and the plumber has come to connect the gas line to the fireplace, and we have fire! So excited to be able to use this fireplace during the winter right in the keeping room kitchen.

Wednesday was a big day as the Imperial Danby marble has been installed, which was a key factor in the completion of the built-in wall and means the bookcases can now be set in place by the contractor.

The contractor has come today, the last day of Week 7, to install the sliding track antique privacy panel mirrors over the windows. The intention is to have the mirrors slide open and close in front of the windows and slide hidden behind the upper bookcases during the day. Letting in the light was a necessity during the day when the morning sunlight comes through and is most beautiful in the space. This is exciting as the design is tricky, and the mirrors have raised framework to deal with. The measurements are crucial to make this possible. My contractor Jason has pulled off the installation seamlessly.

Next was the installation of the bookcases. The precise placement was key for the mirror’s detail not to get caught up on the bookcase back when sliding open and closed. Jason has also nailed this install. Now that the bookcases have been set in place, the electrician is set to come by the beginning of Week 8 to do the final install of the Currey and Company Tavey silver wall sconces that will be mounted on the outside front fascia of the two flanking bookcases and to set the light switches.

As luck would have it, my painter and wallpaper hanger called to say he finished my commercial project earlier than expected and will fit me in to install the Phillip Jeffries grasscloth wallpaper on the back of the bookcases. This is also happening at the beginning of Week 8.

The one thing that will make our break the final completion of Week 8 will be if the tile installer can come within this next week to lay the mini beach pebble around the front fascia of the fireplace. Also, the four swivel glide club chairs that were ordered at the beginning of February have still not arrived, and with fingers crossed will get here next week. This is not realistic, however. I’ve been informed that if the chairs have shipped, it may take up to 3 weeks to actually arrive. I’m excited to feature all of the products that will make this keeping room pretty in Week 8. Thank you in advance to Surya, Jaipur Living, Good Manors Living, Currey and Company, Phillip Jeffries, and Mari Woods for her patience and expertise in making our vision for the built-in wall a reality with her cabinet design expertise.

This has been the most challenging project with scheduling contractors. I am lucky that this was my own project and not have to deal with explaining to clients the delays that are a serious matter in the design world today. Week 8 will very interesting to see if we can pull off the completion of this keeping room One Room Challenge project.
